Cromwell Golf Course

One of the great things about playing golf in the south is the incredible diversity within a relatively short distance.

Located only 40 minutes’ drive from Queenstown is the almost desert like environment of Cromwell.

Cromwell Golf Course

Where the Wakatipu basin is relatively lush meadowland Cromwell is arid and parched. And on the valley floor, where the golf is located within the township itself, a sand belt exists that is reminiscent of where Melbournes finest courses lie. It is rolling land with some gentle undulation, a combination of exotic trees generally allowing plenty of room to play, with occasional marram grasses to add texture.

The surrounding hills and ranges are relatively arid with only low vegetation. In many ways this could be Australia! The course itself is unpretentious, a country members course with a modest green fee that belies some really interesting golf played on excellent turf.

1st

For me it has to be the 1st hole. This is a drop-down Par 3 measuring only 110 metres.

For me it has to be the 11th hole. This is a drop-down Par 3 measuring only 110 metres.

18th

Puuurrrreee magic! The 18th is a cool, clean and oh so bloody hard to crack.

The second hole, a shortish par four with a generous tee shot is easy to underestimate.

The par 3 third is a stern test for anyone from the back tee with a green complex that demands respect. And don’t for a moment think the round is complete until the 18th has been negotiated!

There is a small but adequate pro shop alongside a tidy but unprepossessing clubhouse and locker room.

There is a practice fairway with range balls available and a very handy chipping and putting green adjacent.  Some carts and buggies are available.
